Favourite Books of 2018

2018 was a pretty good reading year for me in regards to the quality of books, because I suck at time management and was not able to read as many books as I’d have liked to.

I had sooooooo many favourite books this year, shortening it to a list that won’t take a year to read was really hard. I have the need to scream about all these books, and when I was writing this list I got several bursts of joy straight into the heart as I remembered how much I love these books!!

This is my official Favourite Books of 2018 post, but it is also (conveniently) the prompt for today’s Top Ten Tuesday!!! So, I will be linking it up.

In case you didn’t know: Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl, in which bloggers and readers alike can scream together about books but in different topics each week!

Without further ado, let’s fly face first into the list! (These are in no particular order, there would be so many tears if I was asked to do that.)

The book covers link back to their Goodreads pages so you guys can check them out too! Any books that are sequels will have a link to the first book in a series to avoid any spoilers. 😀

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – I have never been more glad for anything, than I am for finally picking up this book this year because HOLY FRICK! WHERE HAD I BEEN THAT WAS SO IMPORTANT IN 2017???? WHY DID I MISS THIS???? This book was honestly amazing, and if I was forced to write a top 5 of 2018 list this book would be on it. Now I just need to get to the sequel and hopefully refill my heart because the ending of book 1 bROkE mE!!! (Full Review!)

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson – I think this one has been on a few of my lists since I’d read it. But I loved it so much? The early reviews for this book were mixed and so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was so surprised! I loved it so much!! My HEarT! I loved the stabby faeries, I loved Rook the precious cinnamon bun, I found this book funny? I found myself giggling and smiling like a doof quite a lot. I can’t wait for further works by this author! (Full Review!)

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas – I recently just finished a re-read of this book because I reaaaaaaally wanted to read it again. So good. This book is constantly in the back of mind, though more specifically the places in this book. I keep thinking about Velaris and the Illyrian Mountains. Maybe because they seem like the kind of places my introverted self might enjoy?

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas – This book had me so nervous and scared. All my favourite characters were in BIIIIIIG trouble, and I was stressed. I don’t want to go into too much detail cause… major spoilers. BUT I liked the way this series ended, I feel like it was wrapped up nicely…. BuT TheRE wAs StIlL aLl thAt PAIN!! I cried at least 5 times. Some of those 5 times lasted longer than I will ever confess to.

The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – My fave of the Trilogy was Gemina, but I honestly loved all three books so much that I couldn’t say only one of them was my favourite. I loved everything about these books, I though I would struggle because of the unique formatting but I was dragged into this world so fast and I loved every second of it. I was mesmerised…. I STILL am fascinated and shocked by this trilogy and I am planning to re-read them next year. ALSO!!! THIS AUTHOR DUO HAS ANOTHER BOOK COMING OUT NEXT YEAR!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE! (Full Review! This was back in April, I just looked at it today and the formatting is so weird. what the heck?)

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black – This was one of the first book I read in 2018 (I think it might have been the 4th?) and I remember loving it so much while I was reading it. And I love it just as much as I am writing this now! I found it to be quite the refreshing read, considering the amount of tropes in vampire books that usually kinda ruin the story. I loved the characters (though the betrayal from some of them made me a little mad >.<), I loved the world (it had dystopian vibes which I liiiiiiiike), and I loved the story. Holly Black is a great story teller and I can’t wait to read more of her works!

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – That’s right! I did it! I finally, in this year of 2018, dived into Stiefvater world and I. Am. Loving. It! I have only, at this point on time, read 2 of her books but I have enjoyed the both immensely and am looking forward to reading more of her writing! This book though, was amazing! I loved every second of it. I loved our two main characters, Sean and Puck, I loved their interactions. I also really enjoyed the horses, though I was unfamiliar with some of the terms and such, I loved that there were more or less two different kinds of horses. I mean, Sea horses. Horses that come out of the sea. Angry horses from the sea who just want to go home. I loved it. (Full Review!)

This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada – I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. I knew it was a dystopian book, and that was what made me want to pick it up so urgently. I was surprised by how much I absolutely loved it! There was quite the bit of science in this book, with the gene-hacking and genkits and what not. But I feel it added so much depth to the story itself and what the characters had to face and outsmart. I am so ready to dive back into this world! I have the second book on my shelf but I’m going to hold out in reading it because I want to wait till book three is out. ‘Cause I’m a wimp and I am trying to protect my fragile heart from damage. 😀

Angelfall by Susan Ee – THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK I READ IN 2018!!!!! AND IT WAS AMAZING!!! I literally DEVOURED the whole trilogy in like four days. This is another dystopian book, but instead of humans destroying the world themselves. The angels decided to do be bad boys and did a bit of the murder. Though later in the books it’s somewhat revealed that the angels as a whole were not all evil destroyers of all things good and pure. I loved it! And want to re-read it right now! (all these re-reading plans are making my TBR cry….)

Geekerella by Ashley Poston – I think I’ve done a lot of screaming and squealing in regards to this smwshy, fluffy, extremely adorable book. Buuuuuuuuut I don’t think I’m done yet!! SO FLUFFY! SO CUTE!! SO ADORABLE!!! I only cried like once…… not including the crying that came from all the cute. 99/10 would read again. WILL read again. (Full Review!)

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer – *deep sigh* I love this book. I want to read it again. And again. And again. Basically I want it glued to my eyeballs. It was such a beautiful read, it was so uplifting and fluffy, but then it was heartbreaking and sad. All in all, the destruction of my heart was totally worth it. (Full Review!)

More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer – *a surprisingly deeper sigh* I love this book too! Though Letters to the Lost and More Than We Can Tell can be read as standalones, they do take place in the same universe with MTWCT happening after the events of LTTL. I was so in love with this book, partially because it was an AMAZING book in it’s own right, and mainly because we got to follow precious little Rev from LTTL!!!! I loved Rev in LTTL and I won’t tell you how loud I screeched when I found the book on Goodreads but I’ll give you a hint…… it was very loud. (Full Review!)

  1. Most of the books I read in 2018 were backlist as well, so I don’t blame you! Just because a book was released over a year ago doesn’t mean that it can’t be good!

I am a HUGE fan of Holly Black. The Cruel Prince was one of my faves this year, and the cruel twist on faeries reminds me of her darker twist on vampires. I also loved ACOMAF and I have been trying so hard to keep up with the series, but I haven’t read ACOFAS yet. I am a little bit cautious about the spinoff vibe, but I might still give it a shot.

This Mortal Coil has been popping up all over my feeds, so I think it is finally time to check it out. I haven’t read a good dystopian for a while, but I hope this one can change that!

    I hope you have a great 2019!

    1. So true!! So many back-list books are absolutely amazing!!
Holly Black is such a great writer, I love the twists she adds onto different folklores. I haven’t read many Holly Black books (I am currently reading my second Holly Black book) but I love her writing!! I am so ready to read The Cruel Prince, I’ve been waiting till I could get my hands on The Wicked King!!
I know what you mean, I’m a little wary about a spin off series for ACOTAR, but it’d likely be worth a read.
I loved This Mortal Coil!! I hope you enjoy it, if you give it a chance!

Thank you! I hope you have a good 2019 too!! ❤

Also, I have Strange the Dreamer on my tbr (the tbr of books I actually own and read soon, not the tbr on Goodreads that is like 2,991 books long) and I’m pretty prepared to ask for permission to squee. Happy 2019 reading!! 🙂 ❤

  3. Angelfall, yessssss. I love that trilogy! I bought used copies of the entire series a few months ago so I could reread them but I don’t know how soon I’ll actually get to them. (I can TOTALLY relate to rereading plans clashing with TBRs) 😅
And ahhhh, I still need to read Kingdom of Ash! Someday soon hopefully, if I can work up the nerve to pick up that giant book…

Here’s my TTT post if ya wanna check it out:

  4. Gemina is my favorite of the Illuminae books. I just love Hanna and Nik and his sister (who I’m drawing a blank on her name, but she was awesome). An Enchantment of ravens looks pretty awesome too!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Gemina was my fave too! I think the sisters name is Ella?? They were my three fave characters too!!! I loved the dynamic between them and all the banter! XD
An Enchantment of Ravens was such a nice read! Though there were stabby faeries and enchantments everywhere, I would still try to label it as cute?? I found it a cozy read!
      Happy Reading! ❤

  5. Oh man I loved the first two Illuminae books so much. Though I didn’t really dig the formatting, but I listened to them, and the audio books are reeeeally good. So how does Obsido rate against the first two? I haven’t gotten to that one yet.

Also really enjoyed The Scorpio Races. And might just have to add Geekerella ot my list. Find myself more and more in need of some fluff lately.

    Happy 2019!

    1. The Illuminae Files are amaaaaazing!!! I’ve heard really good things about the audio books for these books, I might have to download them when I go to reread!
Obsidio was GREAT FUN! IT WASN’T PAINFUL AT ALL!!! (I may have sobbed a little) I really liked it, but out of the three Gemina is my favourite! 😀

Geekerella was so friggin’ fluffy…. I highly recommend it! For me, it definitely is one of those satisfying-fluff books!
      Happy 2019 to you too!!
