7 Types of Book Covers That Please The Eyes

We bookish creatures are simple. We see a book with a pretty cover. We stare. We drool. We buy.

There are many different types of book covers, as your book hoarding dragon heart may know, all of which are extremely high up on the “I don’t know what the book is about but I need it.” Sometimes you don’t even realise you’re buying the book, you’re just staring at it and the next thing you know you’re in your house throwing the receipt over your shoulder and do one of two things. 1) Sit on the closest possible surface and slowly, carefully open the book, you will be sitting there for the rest of the day + night until the book is finished. 2) You lovingly slide the book onto you’re bookshelves ignoring the growling coming from the other books. This is where that book will remain.

Forever.

Until the guilt kicks in.

If you think otherwise then that’s just a great big

and you know it.

But that’s not the point of this post. LESS SHAME MORE FUN!

Book covers. Let’s be real. All of them are beautiful one way or another. Most books, based on their covers alone, leave us like:

And so. Without Further Ado!!!! Here are my 7 favourite types of book covers!!

I’m linking this post up to this week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt, which is a “Book Cover Freebie!” And, I’ve had this post drafted for a year, so it’s finally time for me to brush of the dust and polish this post ready for your all consuming eyes!

All covers will link back to their Goodreads pages so you guys can check them out too! As always, any sequels will be linked to the first books to avoid spoilers!

1) Gorgeous Character Portrait Art!

If you’ve ever laid your sight orbs on Margaret Rogerson’s books, you know exactly what I am talking about. Charlie Bowater is a literal goddess, I mean her work puts diamonds to shame! And these are only SOME of the books blessed by Charlie Bowater art. There are so many other beautiful covers by so many Ultra-Talented Artists.

Every time I see an artist has designed/illustrated a book cover of a book I KNOW I’m going to love, I scream a little inside. I need them in my life.

Get. *clap* More. *clap* Book. *clap* Covers. *clap* Drawn. *clap* By. *clap* Artists!

I used to avoid books with people’s faces on them? Even the art ones?? I don’t know why?? Who was I??

Any way, I love them now and will not stop until I have collected them all!

2) Intricate Branch Book Covers

I make it no secret that I am madly in love with the magical existence of trees. And so, every time I so much as peek at a book with anything related to trees I’m there. That book will be mine. It wiLL LIVE IN MY HOUSE!

Also, the longer I look at the covers for A Curse so Dark and Lonely and A Heart so Fierce and Broken the more I can feel my asthma coming to get me. THE DETAIL!!! THE THORNS!!!

3) Boats. Ships. Pirates.

Anything related to the ocean, sailing and a hunt for a grand treasure. With a pressing limited amount of time before thE WOrLd ENdS! *mind cues the Pirates of the Caribbean music*

Just… look at the boats and the oceanness-ness and tell me you don’t want to go on an epic quest across the vast seas on a sail boat.

I know you do.

4) Birds. Beautiful Birds.

Ah. Beautiful.

I would like to befriend some crows/ravens/all the birds, but there is like a 98% chance I will either frighten them or they will try to fight me.

So instead, I’ll just stare at these book covers and pretend I have a crow companion that I would name Chainsaw and go for ominous walks in the woods with.

But also, look at this GIF I found of crows in the snow! It’s very important!

Aren’t they just so lovable??

5) Manga/Graphic Novel Covers

I love the art in manga in general, and I need to buy mORE!

But the covers…

The covers are something else entirely. I mean, look at The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It’s Volume 2 but all the covers are stunningly beautiful, but this one. LOOK AT THE FLOWER ARCHWAY! LOOK AT THE RAIN! THE LEAVES!! SOME ONE, Kore Yamazaki, SAT THERE ARE DREW ALL THOSE LEAVES!!!

wow omg amazing sparkle whoa GIF

Our eyes have been blessed.

6) The Colour Burst!

The vibrancy. OOOF! I want me a thousand of these please and thank you!

I love these for many reasons;

  • Beautiful
  • Details and the colour combined make my mind go boom (LOOK AT THE CLOUDS ON ILLUMINAE AND THE POWDER BLAST ON THIS MORTAL COIL!!)
  • If you’re crafting yourself a rainbow bookshelf, *points* these are your best friends.

7) Snake-u

What can I say?? The snake on every YA fantasy book trend has secured a place in my heart forever. 100% would stare at the beautiful covers they grace with their presence all day.

They are working hard to make all their Slytherin friends proud. And we adore them, these precious, angry and cute little reptiles.

We didn’t ask for the snakes-on-all-covers thing but gosh am I glad that someone put it out in the world.

What types of book covers do you love the most?? Is there anything that if you see it on a cover, you’re going to grab it and stare at it?? Did you like the YA Snake trend thing??

    1. Black and Gold is such an enchanting combination of colours! Any book cover with a black and gold combo would reel me in every time too!

    1. Thank you! ❤ Aren't they?? I'm pretty sure they are enchanted by the Fae to get us to wander into forests and "accidentally" slip into their world via a hidden portal. Not that I'm complaining! I just hope they don't turn me into a goose?

    1. Thank you!! Haha, they are very captivating! *gasp* MAYBE THEY’RE ENCHANTED?!?! I wouldn’t be surprised to be honest XD
I’m honoured! I hope you enjoy your visit to my blog (and that my content isn’t to scream filled. There should be words in there somewhere…)! ❤

  1. Great list! I love seeing so many covers. And YESSSS to so many of your descriptions in the opening. I bought two books today at Target almost without realizing it. No. Three. Oops.

I am a huge sucker for either bright colors (something shiny!) or really interesting character portraits. Must. Buy. 🙂

    1. Thank You!! ❤ hahaha! It happens to the best of us! I thought I had pretty good self control, since I'm introverted and every time I'm in the town I am on high alert, but yet somehow I end up at the check out of a shop handing over my money for books?? How?? A possession?? A curse?

YES! I love that shiny foil stuff they put on covers! Like, you tilt the book slightly and suddenly beams of light shoot you in the eyes! Thank you book! I have been blessed by your beauty! 😀

    1. The covers for Illuminae and Strange the Dreamer are so gorgeous! Their sequels are just as beautiful! I really like having them on my shelf, not only are they beautiful to look at but the books themselves are sooooo gooooood!!!

  2. I mentioned snakes too but in an entirely different context. I’ve named the trendy snake Booksnake and I’m tired of him (mainly because snakes terrify me). I do gravitate toward birds on covers as well as tentacles for some reason.

    1. Oooo! I like Booksnake! That’s good! He lives on our shelves and I guess we’re responsible for looking after him now! XD

I especially hover ominously towards books with mysterious looking birds on the cover. Like, birds that are up to no good. They probably have planned to steal something shiny. A Great Heist if ever there was one! XD
I definitely look at anything sea/ocean inspired! There’s something about reading books set at/under/near the sea that’s so captivating to me. Like, mermaids, sirens, pirates, POSEIDON! There’s just so much to love, so I give anything sea inspired a chance! ❤

    1. There is! I don’t know about you but seeing branches on book covers makes me want to go hide in a forest, with said book, and do nothing but read, the only noise being the rustling of leaves. I’m going to have to do thins one day I think! Get away from the noise of everyday life and just relax, it sounds really nice!

  3. Sorcery of Thorns is amazing. Love that cover. An Enchantment of Ravens is awesome too and I also really like The Queen of Nothing.

I love that ship GIF too.

    1. Sorcery of Thorns is beautiful inside and out. Margaret Rogerson has been blessed with beautiful covers I swear! And her writing is just as magical!
I… may have watched that ship GIF for much longer than I should have… It’s quite hypnotic

  4. Whaaat, you been spying on me? How do you know about that receipt thing? *stares closely at you*

I’m reeeeally feeling the gorgeous character art covers lately. I’ll be the first to admit that i normally don’t look books with people on the front. I feel weirdly watched and judged. But that’s mostly just … photographed people? Real-looking people? I’m in love with all three of the covers you shared, though, and I find myself gravitating towards those types of covers more and more, and what the difference is, I have no idea! I’m just a contrary bookwyvern, I guess.

I’m 100% all for the bird covers. I will forever pick up covers that have crows and/or ravens on them, and I don’t even know why. Probably a curse from an evil enchantress, and you know what? I’m fine with that.

My favorite trend with book covers now is DRAGONS. Because … well … dragons? Duh. Things like The Priory of the Orange Tree and Black Leviathan and all the Lady Trent books. I want more dragons, please.

    Here’s my TTT post.

    1. I may have peeked… a little… BUT YOU HAVE NO PROOF!!!! *flees into the night in a poof of smoke*
Oh my gosh yes! Me too! Every time I see a cover with character art on it 12/10 times I click on it and investigate because my dragon brain says I need this new shiny for the hoard. I must have a shinier and prettier hoard than my siblings. FOR HONOUR! (lol my siblings don’t read… so I win?)
I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN! Drawn people on book covers? All cool! Photographed people on book covers? “I DIDN’T BUY YOU SO THAT YOU COULD ATTACK ME LIKE THIS??” *silence* “DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT?” *silence* “I CAN BUY MORE BOOKS IF I WANT I’M AN ADULT!”
It really does feel like they’re judging you and your choices… I may have spoken to a few trying to justify my book buying habit XD

Do you think I was there too when you got cursed?? Because I’m exactly the same? The last time I went into a bookshop I picked up this book to look at without knowing what it was, because it had crows on the cover. Turns out it was a murder mystery. I don’t read murder mystery. I don’t OWN any murder mystery. I don’t even remember walking into the murder mystery section? There was a crow book, so I was there. Thank you evil enchantress! You blessed my sight orbs! She’s so kind to us. This is the best curse EVER!

DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! Oh my gosh I want more books with dragons on them so bad!! Like there are so many options too!!! dragon art!! … screaming, angry dragons + soft, baby dragons + pirate dragons. Wait. A dragon with an eye patch. I think I’m on to something! IMAGINE EMPLOYABLE PIRATE DRAGONS!!!!!!! DRAGONS LIKE GOLD! SO WHY NOT HAVE A PIRATE DRAGON HUNTING DOWN ALL THE TREASURE IN EXISTENCE BECAUSE HE/SHE WANT TO HAVE A SUPER BEDAZZLED NEST!
Now I’m going to have to write a book about pirate dragons… fate has decided that I must!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. My siblings don’t read, either. It’s a great measuring stick, because it’s something I will forever beat them at, so neener neener.

OMG YES, THEY’RE SO FREAKING JUDGY. Like can you not?! I knoooow I have a bookshelf full of books that I haven’t read, but this new one has a DRAGON and ASSASSINS, and logically speaking, I HAD to buy it.

I mean … it could be worse? Though, come to think of it, it could be better. I’m kind of digging the whole “pricking your finger and getting to sleep for years” thing because goodness knows I could use that right about now.

Are … are there pirate dragon books? I feel like I’ve missed out. WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING WITH MY LIFE?! I want all the pirate dragons. WRITE THAT BOOK. THIS MINUTE. Why has no one thought of this sooner? It’s clearly a bestseller in the making. Dragons = awesome. Pirates = great. Dragon pirates = awesometastic greatness. I see no problems with this plan.

        1. MWHAHAHA! WE ARE VICTORIOUS! It’s the younger ones to look out for though, they’re snarky. “Why don’t you go live in a library if you love books so much?” I THINK I JUST MIGHT! BYE!

RIGHT?!? YOU BUY ONE NEW BOOK AND YOU GET EITHER “Don’t you have enough of those?? or “Haven’t you already got that one??” NOOO! THIS ONE HAS A DIFFERENT COVER! THIS ONE HAS A DRAGON AND DAGGERS! AND IT’S GOT ROYAL DRAGONS IN IT! SO I NEED IT!

My gosh, sleeping for years would really be nice right about now. We have a storm in the UK at the moment and when I say the wind is HOWLING. I mean it. It’s really loud. And the house is creaking, so I can’t sleep at alll! I think a few years sleep would suffice. I’d awaken to a world filled with new releases!
OH! AND WHOLE SERIES! NO MORE WAITING A YEAR OR TWO FOR THE NEXT BOOK IMPATIENTLY! JUST SLEEP FOR A FEW CENTURIES! IT’S FINE!

Not that I know of 😦 There should be. Dragons would make great travelling companions to Pirates!! I’M ADDING IT TO THE LIST OF BOOKS TO WRITE! I HAVE A LONG LIST! BUT PIRATE-DRAGONS IS PRETTY HIGH UP ON THE LIST!

          1. I’ve informed my director that I might as well just live there, after she made the comment the other day that I’m always there, even when I’m not scheduled to work. So … that feels like an invitation. Yes. Yes, I’d like to live there, please. And thank you. I’ll be a troll among the shelves, instead of under the bridge.

I mean … dragons and daggers shouldn’t need an explanation, I feel like.

This reply is late, so … I hope you survived the storm! Or that a friendly neighbor necromancer revived you. xD Either one is fine. I live in a valley, so the mountains block the stronger winds, so I’m lucky. xD Though, if the wind is ever bad here, I have to call my grandfather, on the top of the hill, and make sure he’s still there LOL.

I WILL BETA READ THE PIRATE-DRAGONS IF YOU EVER NEED ONE. I even promise to limit my doodles of hearts in the margin to no more than two per page.

            Liked by 1 person

            1. Troll amongst the shelves is such a mood though?? Like, that’s literally me. Except, instead of asking for a payment of gold coins, I’d be asking for books or the most scrumptious cake from their lands. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m a fair troll I think.

My reply is even later XD I survived the storm!! My new neighbours have a puppy, should I perish I am certain she would come to my rescue. We had two Storms, Ciara and Dennis and now Storm Ellen is coming for us… to say hello and not take my house I hope??
XD Wind is quite the determined soul, it’d take us all if it could! XD

YESSSSSS! Ooo, a bargain! Although the doodles would be most informative! After the manuscript is somewhat completed we must venture out to find a dragon for their approval! Though I don’t know how helpful their editorial noted will be, so maybe it’s best we stick to humans.

              Liked by 1 person

            2. That sounds super fair to me. I’m not supposed to eat cake, though, so I’ll take my payment in books and coffee instead.

You’ve been quite the host, it sounds like. Stop inviting so many storms. It’s a trick! I have a friend named Ellen. Better hope the storm’s nothing like her, because she’d probably take your house just because she can. 😉

We just need an enlightened dragon! As a sensitivity reader, just to make sure we’ve gotten it right. They’re not much for notetaking, but if they’re happy to dictate, I’m happy to jot the notes for them. 😉

    1. AREN’T THEY JUST!!!! Have you ever just sat outside somewhere and there’s a crow nearby, and they don’t really get too close (unless you have food XD) but they just hop around? Being all cute?? Like, do you want me to befriend you, oh ancient deity, trapped in the form of a crow?? BECAUSE I WILL!
I would LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE more books with crows in! Yes please! I’ll take the lot!

    1. Thank you! I love putting books into categories, only problem is every time I do it I feel like rearranging my bookshelves … again! XD I’ve already changed them twice this year! but the urge to arrange them so all the beautiful covers greet me every morning is almost irresistible. I say almost, because I am a little scared to go near my physical TBR XD *stares off into the distance* too many broken and long forgotten promises…

      Liked by 1 person

    1. Right? Even without buying and reading the books we can enjoy some aspect of them! And if we do buy them… but then never read them… WELL WE CAN DROOL OVER THEM INSTEAD!!
