Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
The prompt for this week was actually “Favourite Novellas/Short Stories” …. but I haven’t read enough novellas or short stories to write a full list….. SOOOOOOO, I’m gonna write a list of my favourite Standalone books instead! Because that’s kinda similar……. or not…. but we’re doing it anyway! Okay?
Now that I think about it…. I haven’t read that many standalone books either…. Right.
I’ll list 5 standalone books that I have read (because I have read over 5…. I think) and 5 standalone books I am excited to get to.
Yeah. Good plan. I’m a genius.
Here they be my friends, in no particular order.
Favourite Standalone Books I’ve Read
Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Hehehe. You should have known this would be on here. I’ve screamed about this book on both my blog and on bookstagram. Heck the only place I haven’t screamed about it is on Twitter…. I should probably fix that….
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine
I read this book years ago, but I remember really enjoying it. There was dragon people okay? I love dragons. If a book has dragons in it, it’s kind of an automatic love from me. Especially when said dragons are described in all their glory. Just dragons.
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
Ah Yes! There was art and writing and cute fluffy stuff. What’s not to love?? There was anxiety in this book too though, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine, which is what I also loved about it. But the fluff though…
I’ve recently discovered that I really do like fluffy books?? I am made of fluff. 100% Confirmed.
Night Owls by Jenn Bennett
Yet another art book except there is a lot more fluff in this one. I actually really loved this one, it’s fighting with Geekerella in being my favourite contemporary book of the year (or maybe life really…..).
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
Awwwwww! I loved this book too. Too much. hehehe.
Now that I think back on it, one of my favourite things from this book (there were many) was Gavriel. He was so gentlemanly but so violent (towards the bad guys….. well “bad guys”…. they were bad guys though tbh , they just didn’t seem bad to begin with). Every time he was mentioned on page I just….
You know it’s gonna be good…..
Standalone Books I’m Excited to Read
An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
This has been on my TBR for aaaaaaaages. But I am super excited for it. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I’m just gonna dive on in and hope for the best.
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
*hides* I know. I know. It’s been out for years. I’ve heard from several trusted people that Stiefvaters’ books are amazing and I have a feeling I will love them all. But I just…. haven’t gotten round to them???? I don’t know how?? BUT I WILL! I SWEAR!!!
The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X.R. Pan
I bought this when it was released and I have heard nothing but good things about it. Apparently people can turn into birds???? I know there is art in this one too! YAY FOR ART BOOKS! (I can’t even draw but YAY anyway! It’s fun to read about).
The Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson
This one is a standalone dystopian. Which automatically intrigues me. I’ve also heard some raving reviews about this book too. Apparently there are secrets??? I mean there usually are but…. what kind of secrets could a girl be running from in the aftermath of nuclear fallout??? Rabid Wolves in the snow???? Hmmmm??? Wouldn’t that be friggin’ cool??
This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada
Science. I feel like reading books about science. This one has science. Science is good. Science is fun. Genetic mutation stuff I think??? I don’t know but I’m excited….. I’m excited about all the books who am I kidding?
That last part of the list was supposed to be fun but it’s more like a little shame list…. my TBR finds it’s own little way to smack me in the face *nervous laughter*
What are your favourite standalones?? Are there any you are excited about too?
Feel free to link your TTT and I’ll pop round! 😀
Eliza and her Monsters was amazing! I really loved Geekerella too! And An Enchantment of Ravens is for sure on my TBR 🙂

I’m hoping to pick up An Enchantment of Ravens soon. I feel like it’s going to be a great read.

Standalones are fantastic. I love being able to jump into a world and not be bogged down by the fact that I’m going to have to read so many more books in the series. A lot of the time I just pretend that the first book in a series is a standalone (if it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger of course) and then I’m happy, lol.

I agree. Sometimes, when reading a series, it gets really daunting when you realise you need to read a load of books to get the story. Especially if you aren’t loving the first book in that series.
Haha. Sometimes (most of the time tbh) when I finish the first book in a series, I don’t feel like picking up the second book. So I just turn away and “Oh! Look! A shiny new book that needs my attention!” *dives for the new books, while the rest of that series plots my downfall*

I just read The Astonishing Color of After a month ago (? I think what is time in the summer) and I just finished The Scorpio Races last week! To me, The Astonishing Color of After was good not in a way that drew me in, but in a way that I think the story is so so so important. (How good am I at selling books lol) The Scorpio Races was good! 10/10 I had feelings and tears and I also loved each character SO much which I think is hard to do in a first person dual POV. And in case you needed any more recommendations (which I’m sure you don’t) I think you would like all of Katrina Leno’s books! They’re like contemporary with a touch of the paranormal/magical.

I’m thinking about picking up The Scorpio Races now…. because I haven’t picked up the books I am in the middle of reading sooooo why not jump on in to a new book XD
I’m glad you loved it!!! I was scared that I had hyped it up too much for myself, but now I am excited again 😀
Ooooooo, Hello author I am going to stalk 😀 Magical contemporary sound like exactly what I want to read right now. That’s my reading mood. GIMMMMEEEEEE!!!! 😀

Yes, pick it up! I was sometimes confused with all the horse talk but I still looooved the characters which makes any book worth it for me! And definitely check her out! I think my fave is The Lost & Found, and if you like that I’d try Everything All At Once. 🙂

I’m abandoning my current reads. Not even sorry. I need to read it nowwwww. I don’t know much about horses either but LOVABLE CHARACTERS ALWAYS SAVE THE DAY!!!!
I’ll get The Lost & Found first when I have money…… if I have money #debt #pleaseno
Or I’ll just bribe my family into buying it for my birthday! 😀

Haha I didn’t mean to derail your schedule! But it was one of my fave reads of the summer. And like I know there are things called libraries but it is so much more fun to own books!

Sometimes it’s fun to derail! XD Live that life of rebellion. I agree, something about owning books is so much more fun and also less stressful. I already suffer from not reading books by self-set deadlines, but return dates??? I wouldn’t be able to cope. Especially if I loved a book that I’d borrowed…. I’d have trouble giving it back,
There aren’t any libraries near me. Well… I live close enough to the National Library of Wales but they don’t stock YA…. but they do have some epic paintings from god-knows what era, and a heck of a lot of maps… like super old a-pirate-might-have-used-this kind of map. XD
